WELCOME

Space Cadet is a newsprint zine published on a roughly quarterly basis. Our title comes from the term the father of one of the editor’s used for her when her attention would drift at the dinner table. Here, we set our attention purposefully adrift. This is a publication covering a wide variety of topics inspired by one word per issue that the editors hope you will find meaningful.

We hope reading through these will feel like having a drink with a friend you haven’t seen in a while and hurriedly recounting the things you’ve been thinking about, and new things you’ve learned. A conversation taking twists and turns, different stories spoken by the same voices.  Maybe it feels like walking down the long aisles of a flea market, poking your head into booths packed with countless tchotchkes. All your overwhelmed brain can do is focus in on a few objects that seem familiar, maybe a few that are more exotic. One of them calls out to you, rings a bell, feels worthy. You haggle with the seller and buy it for a few dollars. You keep it on your bookshelf for a very long time. All your guests compliment you on it when they come to visit.

THE EDITORS

ROBIN SCHEINES & NATALIA OLBINSKI

Natalia and Robin met on the first day of college orientation at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Natalia, a design student, found Robin, an art student, to be amusing and liked her pluck. Robin found Natalia to be the coolest person in their dorm. Eventually they went on to collaborate on many projects like creating a conceptual fashion line, to eating a lot of late night pizza together, to this zine project.

Space Cadet is truly a product of a shared spirit of exploration, curiosity and playfulness. Both Natalia and Robin have busy Brooklyn lives and Space Cadet work sessions are a highlight of their weeks.
